Sustainable Energy Performance the Right Way
Presented By:
Douglas Kessler, Vice President, Roy Jorgensen Associates, Inc.

A Case Study overview outlining a real world application of a sustainable energy resource program. The program focused on achieving truly sustainable results across the entire facilities management spectrum that result in on-going and long-term energy and operational savings for a nationally dispersed portfolio of 8M sq ft. The program goals were to reduce total energy consumption by reducing the clients total usage incrementally over the life of the program. Annual targets were established early on realizing that low-hanging fruit and easy-wins would be achieved in the first few years, while the later years would require a more intense and truly innovative approach to reach the targets. By close of fiscal year 2008, the program achieved a 23.5% reduction against a 21% target and avoided over $11,000,000 in energy costs. Avoided 132M lbs of CO2, 442K lbs SO2, and 321K lbs of NOX.

Session 13
9:00 AM - 9:50 AM
Facilities Business Recovery Exercise: A Case Study
Presented By:
Joseph S. Soter, Sr. Facilities Planner, The Aerospace Corporation

In 2008, the Facilities Division of The Aerospace Corporation conducted a business recovery tabletop exercise that uncovered opportunities for improvement in operations as well as business continuity preparedness. Unlike typical emergency or disaster response exercises, this simulation focused on facilities' role in the business recovery phase after the emergency has been stabilized. The presentation will cover how the simulation was staged, some of the outcomes and the post-exercise followup.

Achieving Energy Efficiency in the Office of the Future
Presented By:
Cameron Griffith, Account Manager, Southern California Trane
Carlos Haiad, Project Manager, Southern California Edison

Despite the growing national imperative to conserve energy and natural resources, many energy efficiency and demand response solutions today fail to attain significant market penetration. Trane's Southern California office is currently working with Southern California Edison on an initiative that will make energy-efficient technologies widespread to have a meaningful impact on energy use and demand response, first in California markets and then beyond. The Office of the Future project takes a systems approach recognizing that it is only through widespread application that these technologies, practices and future innovations can have a meaningful impact on energy use and demand response. To develop new approaches to energy conservation, the Office of the Future project is developing criteria for systems across a variety of existing technologies lighting, heating, ventilating, air conditioning, plug load and building controls to reduce energy use in office buildings.

Session 17
11:00 AM - 11:50 AM
Going Solar Without Breaking the Bank
Presented By:
Marc Roper, Vice President, Tioga Energy

In these tough economic times, budgets are dwindling, despite the sustainable desires of businesses and organizations. As utility rates continue to rise, Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs) are helping organizations to green their facilities significantly, without large upfront costs. The benefits of using a PPA are best demonstrated through the case study of The Athenian School in Danville, CA. With more than 1,300 solar panels in the shape of a giant A, the system recently started producing about 50% of the schools energy from the sun without diverting resources away from the students. The PPA model offered school relief from maintenance on the solar panels and allowed officials to lock down predictable energy rates for the next 20 years. For organizations looking to green their operations, the PPA model is the simplest path for generating renewable power. Its a system that offers financing for renewable energy projects without squeezing the budget.

Session 18
12:00 PM - 12:50 PM
Seeing the Light of Day...Cleaning
Presented By:
Rob Kohlhagen, AVP, Sustainability Solutions, Johnson Diversey Inc.

The newest trend in commercial janitorial is the operational flip from night cleaning to day time cleaning. This revolutionary process is saving 4 to 8% of facility energy costs. Our presentation will statisically demonstrate this new concept to the Facility Manager. With energy costs sky rocketing and a projected increase of 14 to 18% in energy costs for 2009 this innovative approach to housekeeping can be a remarkable benefit to the end user. For the facility that is seeking LEED certification this daylight cleaning process can provide innovation points and energy savings. There are additional benefits as well and the presentation will clearly define those. The audience will leave the presentation with manageable information that can directly benefit their current facility needs.

Session 19
12:00 PM - 12:50 PM
Proving Your Energy Savings to Management: Weather Normalization for Energy Managers
Presented By:
John Avina, President, Abraxas Energy Consulting

Utility Bill tracking is at the heart of an effective Energy Management program. Merely comparing utility bills can yield inaccurate indications of the amount of savings from Energy Management programs due to the unaccounted influence of weather or other factors. Correcting utility bills for weather data will give more accurate representations of savings that were accrued. This paper presents the how and why of weather normalization for those who want to become more familiar with the concepts and methodology.

Session 20
1:00 PM - 1:50 PM
